Gem of the Day: “I said someone should do something about that. Then I realized I am that somebody.”

~ Lily Tomlin~

Dear Small Pawsers,

We want to thank each of you who has ever fostered even one Bichon, for even one day, over the past 25 years.

You were their bridge between homelessness or possibly even death, and a loving, forever home.

Without YOU, the lives of tens of thousands of Bichons could have been at risk Perhaps even the one you are loving in your home, right now.

Some of you are no longer able to foster, and we understand that. Life changes happen to us all.

And then there were so many of our wonderful Foster Parents, who are now looking down from the other side of heaven.

A lot happens in 25 years.

Add in Covid and nothing has been the same for rescue.

Fewer and fewer Veterinarians are boarding now, and when they do, some are charging up to $45.00 per night, per dog.

Besides the financial issue, that’s not an option for any Bichon, to be living in a cage at a vet’s office,

We need to experience and watch their personalities flourish in a FOSTER HOME. So that we can share their likes and dislikes with a prospective adopter.

Sometimes, a Foster Mom or Dad will become ill or injured in the middle of a Fostering experience and we will need to move that Foster Dog, quickly.

We need HELP in the way of Foster homes who can Foster either a single Bichon or Bichon Mix, or especially… a bonded pair.

We presently have SIX bonded pairs in rescue, now, with one more pair needing to come in, in Ohio. That’s seven bonded pairs.

Meet Huckleberry and Noodle

We need a Bonded Pair Foster home with in driving distance of Kansas City MO. for “Huckleberry and Noodle”, littermate brothers, who will be four years old on March 3, 2023. Transportation help may be available. One of them has what we believe to be a very slight benign heart murmur. We just picked them up yesterday and will be getting a cardiac ultrasound to make sure he doesn’t need further treatment. They love each other so much. They must stay together. Is there anyone who can foster this precious pair? If you are already a volunteer who can help, let me know.

If you would like to become a volunteer, can you please fill this out for us? We need you! How to Become a Much Needed Small Paws Rescue Foster Parent!

Meet 4 year old “Frodo” and 2 year old “Lyle”.

Then, in Columbus, Ohio, we’ve just gotten an Owner Surrender Form for this bonded pair. They are darling Bichon boys whose owner can no longer afford their care. His circumstances have changed since he adopted them from a Houston shelter. But we need a Foster home who can take them BOTH, before we can take them in. They are located in Columbus, Ohio. If you are already a volunteer who can help, let me know.

If you would like to become a volunteer, can you please fill this out for us? We need you! How to Become a Much Needed Small Paws Rescue Foster Parent!

Sara Rhodes, our Team Leader for Il. IN. N.C. and S.C. is sometimes having trouble finding Foster Homes for a single Bichon. She has no one who can take a Bonded Pair, who isn’t already full.

Michelle Morgan, our Team Leader for the entire state of Texas, is in desperate need of foster homes in South Texas. In San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and all areas in between. For the next dog needing to come in, in the Dallas area, we are going to need a Foster Home. Can you or any of your friends, help us in Texas? How to Become a Much Needed Small Paws Rescue Foster Parent!

Sharon King, our Team Leader in Ohio, is also desperate for Foster Homes for either a single Bichon, and especially for a Bonded Pair. We have a Bonded Pair waiting to come into rescue NOW in Ohio, due to the owner’s financial difficulties, and we can all understand that in times like these.

And Florida, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri are all in need of new Foster Parents as so many of our Foster Homes there have retired or are unable to foster anymore.

We need some NEW Foster homes, everywhere. People’s lives, health, and their abilities to help, have changed over the last 25 years.

We need YOU.

Remember, Small Paws pays all vet bills for our foster dogs. Bonded pairs are placed for a two for one adoption fee.

Also, foster Parents get first right of refusal to adopt their Foster dog at a reduced adoption fee.

Fostering a Bichon, or two, will be the toughest job that you’ll ever love. And you may even end up gaining a beloved family member.

I’m asking with every fiber of my being. Will you be a bridge for a Bichon, or two, to safely cross over, into a loving forever home? All My Love, Robin

I’d gladly walk across the desert
With no shoes upon my feet
To share with you the last bite
Of bread I had to eat

I would swim out to save you
In your sea of broken dreams
When all your hopes are sinkin’
Let me show you what love means

Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?
Don’t you think it’s time?

I would whisper love so loudly
Every heart could understand
That love and only love
Can join the tribes of man

I would give my heart’s desire
So that you might see
The first step is to realize
That it all begins with you and me

Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?
Don’t you think it’s time?

When we stand together
It’s our finest hour
We can do anything
Keep believin’ in the power

Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?
Don’t you think it’s time?

Yeah, yes, I do
Oh, love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?
Oh, don’t you think it’s time?

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
