Gem Of The Day: ” Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail. “
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~
Happy 21st Anniversary to Small Paws® Rescue!
From the book, Chicken Soup For The Soul: Finding Your Happiness:
“Chipper Pressnall” Feb 19, 1998- October 29, 2015.
Chipper was the first Small Paws Rescue.
He started it all for me.
It’s now been 21 years ago, tomorrow, that my husband Dale and I found ourselves on the steps of one of the worst commercial kennels in Missouri. There, we also found the first Small Paws Bichon, Chipper Pressnall. In horrible condition, living in a place with a dead horse in the front yard. Children were playing inside of the carcass.
I found many other things there on that fateful day in May, too.
Though I didn’t know it yet, I found my purpose in life. One which I had prayed for, for years. I found a way to tell hurting people of God’s great love for them, no matter who they were, what they’d done, or where they were in this journey we call life.
I learned about all of the atrocities of the commercial kennel industry and also about how to tell the masses by using national media to tell the story.
Animal Planet alone, is seen in 57 Countries and our story still shows in re-runs, even today.
I learned how precious Bichons end up in shelters through no fault of their own. Shelters which have to euthanize due to a lack of space and too many abandoned animals.
I learned about love and loss. After over 15,000 adoptions, not a day goes by when I don’t receive several e-mails, texts or phone calls, telling of a recent loss of a Small Paws® Bichon who was adopted many, many years ago. Recently, it was 18 year old Cassie Borders, one of our original Hear Murmur Babies.
I learned that I would end up going to places that I never dreamed possible, meeting people I never knew I could ever meet, all giving me the enormous blessing of being able to tell the world about Small Paws and about rescue in general. About the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. About Heart Worm Disease and Preventative.
It’s been the journey of a lifetime and I still can’t believe that He chose me to be the one to tell our story.
But most of all, I learned about an amazing group of people who would become family to each other throughout the years. A family on whom I could depend. That family would become known all over the world as Small Paws® Rescue. A family that would become my personal family, because I didn’t have one of my own.
I want to thank you all, every one of you, for everything you have done for these Bichons, and for Small Paws. Thank you!!

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
(All recipients of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter receive it voluntarily. Small Paws never gleans e-mail addresses from other e-mail lists. Small Paws never solicits e-mail addresses or shares them with other “lists” or organizations.)
