Gem Of The Day: None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” – Mother Teresa

We have some matching challenges for the newest Small Paws Bichons that came in from the CACC shelter in Chicago.

Meet Theo. His is a sad story😢 He was left in a crate outside of the shelter with infection just dripping from his mouth. Thank you for taking him into rescue ❤️. He will need “the works, plus extra” He may need all his teeth pulled but the infection needs to clear up first. His teeth are horrible according to the vet and he has to be sedated in order for them to open his moth to look at them because he screams. His estimate is for around $1,500.00 plus, depending on what he needs done to his mouth and eye. The infection has spread to one of his eyes and he needs to see an eye specialist. He is around 6-7 years old.

First, from Janet Barto, at jpbartos@sbcglobal.net, we have this matching challenge for $400.00. Is anyone blessed enough to match Janet? Thank you so very much, Janet. I hope someone can match you!

“Please issue a challenge for $400 in honor of Minnie and Sadie. Janet Bartos, Little Rock, AR.

Next, from Dawn Bove at d.bove@fcpmllc.com, we have this matching challenge for $250.00. Thank you Dawn! I’m praying that someone is able to match you for these babies!

>Good Morning Robin: So happy to see the good news on our little boys.
I will make a donation in the amount of $250.00 for the new fluffs.
Hope someone can match me soon.
As always sent with Love,
Dawn>

Gem Of The Day: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – Nelson Mandela

This is an update on Pipper and Pongo. As you know, Pipper and Pongo. They were thrown out of a moving car onto a busy highway. Pipper had a broken back in two places and Pongo was pretty beaten up. See the story and pictures below.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws Rescue for the first 19 days of February, 2019
coming to $21,973.42 which is an average of $1,098.67 per day
.

Pipper’s surgery went well! He is still a patient at the Blue Pearl and Emergency Pet Hospital in Katy, Texas. He’s been moved to the medical boarding part of the hospital to help to stretch our funds, ($70.00 per day) but he is getting the same care he was getting over in the ER. He may be there another ten days.

Looks closely! Here he is a few days ago trying to stand with his back legs. This is amazing progress! He has complete feeling in his back end and just needs to work on his range of motion. He has taken TWO STEPS on his own! He is eating like a horse and is off of all IV meds. They have switched him over to oral. But he still has a way to go to get back to where he was before he was almost a murder victim.

One Year Old Pongo, who was also the victim of attempted murder.

Is there anyone in the Houston area who could possibly foster Pipper and his brother, Pongo, and be able to take Pipper to physical therapy at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists Rehabilitation for a few weeks? Then we have a more permanent foster home in Oklahoma. Let us know if you can help!

Next, we have this letter from Sara Rhoades at pacess4@att.net, our Team Leader for Il.

Hi Robin
So we have had a busy weekend In Illinois!! Thank God for our awesome volunteers and you for being on call 24/7 ❤️

So here is the run down !!

Linda O. picked up three fluffs from CACC shelter. The first is a young female named Daphne.

Daphne is at PVC and will need “the works”! Her estimate is for around $800.00.

Second is a male, Theo ( love the name )
His is a sad story😢 He was left in a crate outside with infection just dripping from his mouth.

Next is another male.  He is between 6-7 years old and we named him “Henry”. Henry needs the works to as well as extensive dental work. His estimate is for around $1000.00.

So that all happened this weekend!! Help! Sara

Help is needed. We need to raise $3,200.00 for this latest round of Bichons that were saved from assuming room temperature. This particular shelter has numerous pavilions. They serve all of Chicago and the surrounding area. They can not turn an animal away as they are funded by the city. They deal with an average of 800-1200 animals every day. That’s why we see so many Bichons coming form the CACC. Thank God the Rescue Director calls Sara!

Thank you for being there for Pipper with a broken back in two places. They expect that he will be just fine in time. And thank you for supporting just the ordinary ones. The one’s with no broken bones, but with broken hearts. Thank you all.

If you’ve made a past donation by credit card, you may e-mail Louie Bertolino at louieb@smallpawsrescue.org to let him know the amount of your donation for the Bichons.

Prayer Requests and Reports

February 18, 2019 from Kim Bultzo at kbultzo25@comcast.net

Dearest Robin,

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.  I’ve just spent the past 5 months in and out, more in than out, of the hospital.  I believe I mentioned that I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, which I was also told could sometimes be reversed with medication.  Unfortunately, mine has not improved and now they are talking transplant.  I recently had a defibrillator implanted which should help somewhat but will not obviously solve the problem.   I am still hopeful for a turn around with medication, but the doctors are not.

Denis and Jimmy, her husband, have been caring for me {mainly Denis}.  She is doing “Yoeman’s” work and I will never be able to thank her enough.  They have put their lives on hold for me basically.   All of their friends, and my new friends, in Denver have sent prayers, well wishes and small gifts.  It means so much, especially the prayers.

I wish I had extra funds to donate, but unfortunately the medications I am currently on are quite expensive.  I promise if I win the lotto or come into a large sum of funds you will be the first I think of.   You know how much You, SPR and it’s Angel Volunteers mean to me.

If you have a chance, don’t mind and can remember, could you say a prayer for me.  You seem to have some pull with the God so any mention you could give me would be greatly appreciated.   Please know this is said with the utmost respect and admiration as I’ve always told you.   Robin, you are a very extraordinary individual with special connections.  Always remember that.

I’ll stop now, I know how busy you are.  I hope I haven’t taken up too much.  Please take care of yourself and Dale and of course your other special family members.  Thank you for all you do for SPR and the World.

With Love & Admiration,

Kim

Gem Of The Day: “A dog is not a thing. A thing is replaceable. A dog is not. A thing is disposable. A dog is not. A thing doesn’t have a heart. A dog’s heart is bigger than any “thing” you can ever own.”

Something has happened in south Texas and we need your help.

Yesterday around 5:00 I got a call from Blue Pearl and Emergency Pet Hospital in Katy, Texas, just outside of Houston. A Good Samaritan had been driving on a highway at rush hour and witnessed the driver of the moving vehicle in front of her, THROW two small dogs out of the driver’s side window onto the highway below, with other cars speeding by. And no, the driver didn’t stop. This was intentional. I was livid but now we need to focus on saving them.

One Year Old “Pipper”                      One Year Old “Pongo”

The Good Sam blocked traffic with her car and rescued both of the dogs. Both were injured by the fall to the pavement at high speeds. They were not hit by other cars, thank God.

She took them directly to the Emergency Hospital.

One of them, Pipper, the all white one, is injured with two fractures on his back. Thankfully, (and I’ve confirmed this with Dr. Skip Tangner, our surgeon in Oklahoma City. Skip looked at the digital X-rays.) this IS surgical, meaning that surgery can fix it.

When they first called, they said these were both one year old males, not neutered and in rough shape.

They said they didn’t look like pure Bichons, but one of them may be a Bichon Mix. We were their last hope after having called several other rescue groups.

We got the pictures and I made an Executive Decision to take them in. I hope I did the right thing.

Pipper is going into surgery this morning. Time is of the essence as there is only a small window of time when it comes to back injuries. He came in, already down in his back end, but still has deep pain sensation.

The estimate for the surgery, with our 20% rescue discount, starts at the low end of $4,850.00 and we have put down a deposit. They will also need their regular vetting which will be about $1,200.00

Pongo is being transferred to our regular vet today. He has some serious road injuries but is happy and raising up to be held. Nothing is broken.

And the little guy also lost some skin on his nose, as well.

I hope this is what you would have wanted me to do even though they re not pure Bichons.

Pipper looks as if he once met a Bichon and Pongo was with him, so he probably met a Bichon, too.

I will issue all matching donation challenges for Pipper and Pongo. I can’t even imagine the pain and fear they must have experienced.

All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
