Very Sad News. The trauma to Zoey’s Lung Was Too Great. Please Read.

Monday Afternoon, June 10, 2019

We have sad news. Our little Zoey didn’t make it. The surgeon called me while she was still under anesthesia and told me that when he got in there, one of her lungs was completely “chewed up”. Those were his words.

He said he had no idea how she survived for two days. I asked him about the x-rays and why they didn’t see it. He said it was behind torn thoracic muscle and wouldn’t have shown up on the x-ray.

He said he would have to remove the lung if we proceeded and the odds of survival were 40% or less. That it’s very uncommon for a dog to have a lung removed and that he had already told the people in the room that he didn’t think Zoey would survive the trauma and to get me on the phone immediately.

I went from thinking that we had this, to within a few hours, telling him I needed five minutes to contact our Board for a vote on euthanasia. He said he needed a decision right then as she wasn’t tolerating the anesthesia well with so much trauma, internally, in her lungs. I had to give the order to let her go.

The final bill was $3, 263.50 including our 20% rescue discount.

I’ve just been lying on our bed trying to figure out how to tell you.

I want to offer a refund to anyone who made a donation since we lost Zoey.

Just write to me and let me know.  I understand how disappointed you all are because I’m just stunned.

After an ER Vet and a Surgeon tell you it will be ok and then to get that call and have to make that decision. Well, it just plain hurts.

I know where Zoey is now. She isn’t hurting or afraid. She with the Lord of Lord and King of Kings and one day, we can see here again. How do I know this is where she is? My Bible tells me so.

“Revelation 5:13 King James Version (KJV)

13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”

This is what I believe as sure as I am typing to you now. I believe she is with our Lord. It was a tough 30 hours. It was even tougher for little Zoey. But she’s more than ok now. She’s Home. All My Love, Robin

Monday Morning, June 10, 2019

I received a call from the surgeon this morning. In the night as they were flushing Zoey’s lungs, she began to gurgle and air was coming up. The x-ray missed a place on her lung where there are two small puncture marks. The surgeon heard it and recognized it this morning. He said he needs to go in there and repair it, and insert a chest tube. The cost for this, including two additional days of ICU, would normally be $5000.00 but we get a 20% rescue discount, so we are looking at needing around $4000.00 more. After we’ve come this far, and because she is so young, between 3-4 years old, I didn’t think you would want us to stop now.

Read about this amazing surgeon, Dr. Alexander Warrack.

He feels very confident that she will be fine after surgery. Infection is the concern. They are going to do everything they can to keep that from happening. I asked him how many of these he has done, and his answer was,”Lots. I am good.” That was what you want to hear from a surgeon.

We have this new matching challenge for Zoe’s surgery.

From Janet Bartos at jpbartos@sbcglobal.net, we have this dual challenge for $200.00 and for $21.00. Thank you Janet!

I’m issuing a $200 challenge for my sweet girls who are now Angel Fluffs, Minnie & Sadie.

Also, issue a challenge to EVERYONE to match $21.00 for 21 amazing years of Small Paws Rescue in honor of Robin and all the volunteers over the years!

Thank you all for your hard work on behalf of all the precious fluffs you have helped find forever homes.

Love you all!!  Janet Bartos in Little Rock, AR>

Help is still needed for Zoey. Thank you for helping her. Thank you for praying. All My Love,Robin

Sunday Night June 9, 2019

We have the best that can be expected news on little Zoey who was attacked by two large dogs and almost assumed room temperature. (Please see story and pictures below.)

Our bill is at $1000.00 as of now. The radiologist feels certain that Zoey’s lungs were NOT compromised. That is a life saver right now. That is the power of prayer!

We have given a deposit of $632.60.

They sent this estimate to me in PDF form. It’s the only way I can share it with you.

Click here to see the PDF file including her x-rays. and medical notes. Evidently the shelter took her here yesterday and them took her back to the shelter and called us today.

In order for us to get her through to the morning, the total estimate from the time we brought her in through tomorrow morning is for $3,175.37. This includes the $632.60  we have already paid since we brought her in this afternoon.

This additional estimate will include initial wound care, I.V. pain meds and I.V. fluids and I.C.U Care.

In the morning, they will move her across the hall to the surgeon in order for him to take care of these massive wounds. She will not be needing lung surgery!

We have two matching challenge donations. First from Dawn Bove < d.bove@fcpmllc.com> we have this challenge for $250.00. Is there anyone who can match her? Thank you Dawn!

Hello Robin: I sure hope there’s a bunch reading this Sunday evening. We have to get her patched up.
I will make a challenge for $250.00. Hope someone can match me soon.
As Always sent with Love,
Dawn
And from Deborah Berger at normetski@aol.com we have this challenge for $100.00. Thank you Deborah!

So this is where we are. We have to pay this bill before she can see the surgeon. They have changed their policy as of the first of the month. All bills must be paid in full in one department, before referral to another department. Help is needed for Zoey. It’s a miracle she survived this vicious attack. Robin

Sunday Afternoon, June 9, May 14, 2019

No Gem of the Day. Life or Death Emergency.

I got a call from Sara Rhodes, Team Leader for Illinois. A little one has been attacked by what they said was two large dogs. A Good Sam saw the attack and took her to the CACC shelter in Chicago.

We have named her “Zoey”.

One of our volunteers, Linda Oschenfield, ran over to the CACC get her to rush her to:

Premier Animal Hospital

Orland Park
Emergency service available 24/7/365

7000 W. 159th St.
Orland Park, IL 60462
p: 708-388-3771

This is the wound they are very suspicious of.  They are concerned she may have lung damage internally. They suspect several broken ribs.

They want to do three x-rays, send those off to a radiologist, put on a patch for pain and the emergency room visit. All of this comes to $797.00. I felt you would at least want us to see if we can save her life.

Something tried to kill her.

We MUST find out of If she has internal lung damage. If so, the prognosis is possibly surgical.  But we would need to change treatment plans immediately.

They are supposed to call me back in an hour and a half with the news. I will come and let you all know.

After paying the last two weeks vet bills, we are in the red.

We need help to pay for this initial testing. Right at $800.00. And is anyone even reading this on a Sunday afternoon?

As you know we have seen several dogs that were attacked like this survive and heal. Will Zoey be one of them? W just don’t know. Please pray for her and for funds to come in as soon as possible.

There is no time for challenges. Help is needed immediately.

If you can help, this is how to do this for Zoey. This is urgent and critical. All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
