Dear Small Pawsers,

This is one of those, YOU WON”T BELIEVE IT newsletters, but it all happened, just when we had given up hope.

If you are needing a miracle, I know the Guy who is better at making them than Anyone else.

I know Him up close and personal, and the number of outright miracles that we see at Small Paws® Rescue, continue to multiply.

You are going to love this next story, as much as all of us who witnessed it first hand.

Maybe you want to get a cup of coffee. Maybe a snack too!

It began last summer, late on a Sunday afternoon in August.

Of course it was hot, hot, hot, as August in Austin, Texas, tends to be.

I was on our back porch at our home in Tulsa, OK. with iced tea, under the ceiling fans, when the first email came flying in.

It was from a close family friend of one of our previous adopters, and volunteer foster parents, Rene Villigas.

See Renee’s obituary

Renee’s body had been found at his home, along with his three SPR dogs, Quasar, Zar. and Kamby. There was no foul play and he died of natural causes.

The dogs had been with his body for three days.

I went to work contacting shelter workers AT HOME, trying to secure their legal release to us immediately.

These were dogs who slept in the bed with their Dad.

They had already experienced massive emotional trauma, and now they were in cages at a SHELTER.

They couldn’t even be housed together, due to a steadfast shelter rule put in place to prevent dog fights.

And I understand that.

But these guys wouldn’t know how to fight. They needed each other, now, more than ever.

If I had to fly down there myself, they were coming home to Small Paws. And you KNOW that I would, too.

An amazing Small Paws® Rescue Volunteer, stepped up to the plate in a way that we could have never seen coming.

God knew just what He was doing.

Tivra Marks, at tivramarks@hotmail.com, said that not only would she spring them from the shelter, but after some updated vetting and quarantine, SHE OFFERED TO FOSTER ALL THREE OF THEM YES YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY!

Tivra is a true dog whisperer, and soon she had them all obedience trained and more. It was amazing.

Tivra, can you come and do this for all of our dogs, please? Oh My You Guys need to see this!

See them in action on YouTube!

After almost seven months, NO ONE had applied to adopt them as a bonded Trio. No one. Nobody. Nada. 🙁

Our Board of Trustees made the painful decision to split them up, (GULP) with Qay and Zar being a bonded pair, and Kamby being adopted by himself. OH GOD HELP ME.

Guys, you KNOW me. This was weighing on me day after day. And on Bonnie, too.

Especially when we got a WONDERFFUL application from a man, whose parents live with him, as he is their caretaker. In walked “Evans”.

Already we knew Evans had a loving spirit.

He lost his heart dog, ” BEAU”, last August. (AUGUST, are you following me here??? AUGUST!!!) He was still grieving hard.

Although Evans said he would have loved to adopt all three of our boys, he really could only offer a home for two of them, Qay and Zar.

And of course we understood that. Even two is alot.

Everything was set for the adoption of these TWO to be completed that coming weekend. The transfer was in motion.

Evans had ordered everything that two Bichonly dogs would need. Crates, toys, collars, leashes, halters, special hypo allergenic dog food, the works. Helloooo Amazon.

As the weekend approached, Evans wanted to wait until The Trio’s new things had arrived, and the transfer was moved to the following Thursday afternoon. Stay with me here. Don’t give up now! Miracles are about to break loose in this place!

So it looked as if two of the Trio would have a great home, with everything they needed.

The transfer was all set, when I got this e-mail on the night before, Tuesday night, around 7:00 P.M.

” Hello – my husband and I submitted and application to adopt Zar and Qua yesterday. We understand the vetting process can take some time, but we started worrying about Kamby and him being separated from his friends. We previously had 3 dogs and one time (Lab, German Shepherd and Boston Terrior) so we understand what it is like to have 3 dogs in the house at one time. We want to let you know that we are open to taking all 3 dogs, if you believe we would be a good match for them. We look forward to speaking with you and telling you about our story. Lynn”

I couldn’t believe it. Two of the Trio were all set to go to an excited and very loving adopter in a day and a half.

I’m going to be honest with you.

I stared at this e-mail and started screaming NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOO.

Dale came running down from upstairs, of course. After almost 40 years of marriage, he has my screams down to a tee.

How could this be… at the 11th hour? (Thank God, His timing is ALWAYS right. Don’t listen to my timing! I’m just a very vocal blonde women from Oklahoma. Yes, STILL blonde. Yes, STILL from Oklahoma! Yes, still vocal! Listen to God’s timing!)

I called Bonnie Ferguson, our Director of Adoptions.

When she answered the phone, I started screaming at her, “NO NO NO NOOOOOOO!”

Now, we’ve worked together for almost 27 years, and Bon knows my screams. If you’ve been around me for any time at all, you have learned my screams. (Hey! I was BORN this way! That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!)

But this scream had even Bonnie perplexed.

Then I forwarded the e-mail to her, from the VERY LAST MINUTE GOOD LORD HAVE MERCY LADY WHO WANTED TO ADOPT ALL THREE!

SOMEONE FINALLY WANTED OUR ORPHANED TRIO!

Nooooooo…what could we do?

The adoption for two of them was already set. Adoption fee paid. Adoption contract signed. Excited adopter who had done EVERYTHING right.

Bonnie and I called Tivra, the Trio’s Foster Mom, together, and now for the third time, I went through it all again, “NO NO NOOOOO…Tivraaaa, you won’t believe this”!

Suddenly I felt calm. I felt decisive direction, and I knew from Whence my help was coming, and what I needed to do.

I told Tivra and Bonnie that I would call our first adopter, Evans, and just tell him what had happened.

I would throw myself under the bus. SPLAT.

No, I had never spoken to Evans, but maybe he would know who I am. ( And he did! He’s been following SPR for years!)

BUT, it would be Evan’s decision to either proceed with his adoption of just the two, or for us to to let them be adopted all three, together, by Lynn and her husband, who were also very strong applicants, and recent grievers.

Both of these applicants, Evans and Lynn, were within driving distance of Tivra Marks, their Foster Mom.

That alone is a miracle, for them all to be in South Texas.

Then Tivra said out loud to Bonnie and to me, OUT LOUD ON THE PHONE, “It would be great it we had another bonded pair of boys…”

Time stopped.

Oh My Lord. We ALL three stopped and SCREAMED!

Remember, this was on a Tuesday evening.

The day before, on a MONDAY AFTERNOON, Tivra had gone to the shelter for us to pick up this pair of bonded boys, brought in as strays, with no ID, and no one trying to find them.

Their time was up and in she swooped to get them for SPR, and got them to the vet’s office.

WE HAD A PAIR OF 2 YEAR OLD BONDED BOYS IN EVANS’ AREA THAT WE COULD OFFER TO HIM, IF HE WOULD AGREE!

Meet Bailey and Bentley. At least that’s what I named them. They wouldn’t have those names for long.

Could this POSSIBLY work?

I was going to try!

Everything would have to come together, just right.

I sent a text to Evans, telling him that nothing was wrong, (Well, the dogs were fine! Nothing WAS wrong with THEM!)

No answer.

Hours went by.

In the mean time, Bonnie sent the app to adopt the entire Trio, out to our Application Processor, Susie Harbor, one of our Adoption App Processors whose been with us for many years. and put a BEYOND RUSH ON IT PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

Susie contacted Lynn’s vet. Their lab had passed from cancer. They were grieving.

Oh my Goodness. This couple wasn’t just a good home. THEY WERE A ONCE IN A LIFETIME HOME FOR OUR TRIO!

But we couldn’t even tell them yet!

I first had to talk to Evans.

HE TEXTED! He would call me soon. He had been working.

The first thing I told Evans was that no matter what, if after what I had to tell him, if he still wanted just the two, Qay and Zar, they would be his.

And I began to tell the story from the beginning.

The same one that you all have been reading.

I should have known, the way everything was falling into place.

Oh my. He thought about it maybe 30 seconds, and then he said, “The Trio should go with Lynn so they can all three be together.”

I bawled. You know I did.

Then, I told him about our newest bonded pair. All right there within driving distance.

He saw their picture.

Text From Evans: “Pat seems to be the bigger dog. For some reason. Pat is one the left and Mike is on the right. What’s funny/interesting is that the names immediately came to me, and looking at the picture, it was apparent to me which was which!”

And This: “Good Morning. I have a wonderful lightness in my heart that’s been absent for some time. I’m a firm believer in the “rightness” of things. Throughout my life, a lot of major decisions made themselves because of their overwhelming “rightness”. All of the decisions that felt “right” turned out spectacularly. I told Tivra that maybe “Beau” had a paw in moving the pieces around just right…”

More happy tears!

Then Bonnie and I called Lynn to tell her that they had been approved to adopt The Trio. She was so happy that we heard it though the phone! But first, I needed to tell her THE REST OF THE STORY.

And I did. All about Evans, and how he wanted what’s best for The Trio, so they could all stay together.

Lynn told me that her daughter and her husband were coming for a visit, last weekend, with their 18 year old Beagle. Could we hold The Trio until today? Yes!

I was happy there was an 18 year old dog in the family!

Then Lynn she told us that most of their dogs lived to that age or older!

Yes! This Trio are now 4, 5 and 6 years old!

Today, the Trio went home with Lynn and her husband.

Oh my.

Folks, I couldn’t have made this happen on my own.

This was The Lord.

Ladies and gentleman, we have a match, literally, made in Heaven.

And I knew you would want to see a video of them in their new forever home with Lynn and her husband!

Click here to see that video!

Thanks for reading this to the end and for supporting this Magnificent Obsession we call Small Paws® Rescue, since 1998.

What a perfect ending and beginning for “The Trio” and for “Pat” and “Mike.”

And for Evans, Lynn, and her husband.

All of our hearts are blessed beyond measure today!

All My Love, Robin

“The King is in the room

Come see the scars of love upon his hands

The King is in the room

We’ll watch the darkness flee at his command

Who is this King?

The Healer’s in the room

Let miracles break out across this place…
