Dear Small Pawsers,

This is a very difficult newsletter for me to write.

My own personal Bichon, 15 years and 4 month old Reagan Pressnall, left us to start his life in heaven, on Monday at 4:42 p.m.

This is when I first introduced Reagan, to all of you, back in 2011. The vet estimated he was 9 months old.

Our truly amazing vet, Reagan’s Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Steven Hodges, helped us to provide the last act of love for our best boy, with his Mom and Dad by his side.

This was Reagan, a few years ago when he still LOVED to go in the car. Or in a tour vehicle to see the wild mustangs at the Outer Banks, or on a tour boat to watch dolphins at Gulf Shores AL., or on a plane to a Small Paws® Florida bash, and to so many other places.

Over the years, many of you met Reagan. He was so much more than a pet. So much more than a dog.

He was also my Service Animal.

He was in tune with me 100%.

Many years ago, Dale and I noticed than when I was stressed or upset, (usually Small Paws® related, sometimes seeing these Bichons come into rescue in such tragic physical and mental conditions can be pretty stressful) and my blood pressure would go up, even slightly, Reagan would alert and scratch my leg or arm. It was uncanny.

“Mom, calm down. Mommm..”

So during Covid, in 2020, when we were all stuck at home, I found a reputable place online that did Service Dog training, remotely.

After four months of training, and sending in videos of Reagan completing the training assignments, he earned his certification to be a licensed Service Animal.

After that, he went everywhere with us. And no one ever questioned that he was a Service Animal. He BEHAVED like a Service Animal should. He WAS a Service Animal.

He would be there at hospitals, or when we went to a concert. (He had a special headphone set to quiet the noise.)

Another dog or cat could walk by him and he would ignore it. That was amazing to watch.

He would trot down the jet bridge to a plane, and walk down the isle like he’d done it dozens of times, because he had.

We’d put his bed down and he knew to get it in and ignore everyone.

“DON’T TALK TO ME. DON’T PET ME. I’M BUSY WORKING!”

He was there when his Dad, my husband of 40 years, Dale, had a brain tumor removed in the summer of 2024.

He was an extraordinary and unforgettable part of our lives and I will miss him for the rest of mine.

You may wonder how I know he is with my Jesus, now.

This is how I know. This scripture is about when John, one of Jesus’ disciples got to have a vision of heaven, and he wrote about it here.

Revelation 5:13

“And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Every creature. EVERY creature.

Reagan is with my Lord. Of this I have no doubt. AND, I will see him again!

He no longer is suffering from the cruel disease of dementia, which would cause him to cry out all during the night. His last night, he seemed to have had a neurological event. Something was different. He screamed 27 times. I could not comfort him, and trazadone no longer worked. I knew I couldn’t put him through the mental terror he was going through, even one more night.

I told him about where he would be going, and that he would LOVE it. No more pain or anxiety.

And I told him when he got there, to turn around. That Mom would be RIGHT behind him. Because in heaven there is no time. Time is here on earth with the revolutions of the sun. He will not miss me. To him, I’ll be right behind him because no time will have passed!

Thank you for reading about the life and love of my Reagan.

Of all of the people in the world, God chose me to be his Mom.

And I can’t be anything other than grateful for that.

But I need to tell you that several dogs came in over the Holidays.

One was brought into the Ft. Worth shelter by a Good Sam, and the dog had been hit by a car.

Meet one year old “Henry”. His back end in unstable. His vet at City Vet Preston Hollow, in Dallas, Texas, has referred him to a Neurologist, suspecting a possible spinal injury from being hit by a car.

He is also double cryptorchid, meaning that he has retained testicles and his neutering will involve abdominal surgery. Always more expensive.

So far, we’ve spent close to $1500 dollars on him. Before he can be neutered or put under anesthesia, he must see a neurologist, because something is going on in his back end that isn’t showing up on x-rays.

We could be looking at an additional $5000.00 to save Henry. And he’s only a year old.

We also took in 2 more from CACC in Chicago. Blitzen and Holly. They will run around $2000 each for their vetting.

So we need to raise $6500.00 for henry, and $4000 for Blitzen and Holly, coming to $10,900.00. And right after Christmas, too. (These little ones have no sense of if they’re coming in over a Holiday or not!)

I’m coming to you to ask for help for these dogs, so that we can continue to take in Bichons and Bichon Mixes at the most difficult time in their lives. When through no fault of their own, they are suddenly without everything they once knew. A home, family, and security, and most of all, love.

I will issue all matching challenge donations.

What is a matching challenge donation?
