Gem of the Day: “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, or worn. It is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace & gratitude.”

Dearest Small Pawsers, My Family, My Friends,

I am missing you.

I am missing so many of you who came to the Bichon Bashes from all over the country.

Our 20th Anniversary at our House. October, 2018. States represented: TN., N.C., FL., OK., MA., OH., IL.,TX., UT., Washington DC.,and AZ.,

I miss those of you who have been to our home for a warm chili dinner on a cool fall evening, the night before an Okie Bash. The anticipation. The friendships!

I think I’m probably grieving the wonderful times we usually have at Post Oak Lodge, ‘neath the cover of October skies, in the autumnal hills of Eastern Oklahoma.

I know that many of you are missing so many parts of the lives that we all had before, too.

But I also believe, deep in my soul, that the more we are grateful for what we have now, the less we think about what we have seemingly lost.

We have our very lives. If your dogs are healthy, be grateful for their very lives!

You all will never know what a huge part of my life that YOU are. And you have been so for so many years.

We have all been through thick and thin. (Goodness, I’VE been both thick AND thin! And you’ve all been there to see it! I’m grateful for thin, these past few years. )

Who could ever have imagined in their wildest dreams the ways our very lives would be changing?

There will be no Okie Bash this year, of course.

But I’m still hopeful that I will see you in Florida and in Oklahoma in 2021!

And Sara Rhodes has promised a new bash in The Outer Banks of North Carolina, as soon as we are safe again! I’m up for that! How about you?!

In the mean time, we all will keep on keeping on, saving the lives who need us.

As you know, PP (Pre-Pandemic) we had dozens of Bichons at any one time, from which people could choose to adopt.

Many shelters and rescues all across the country are now seeing an actual shortage of small dogs, not to mention Bichons and “poodle-mixes”.

But we do have four little lives to tell you about! We are grateful!

All but one had some major medical issue that we have had to deal with.

First, I want you to meet 7 year old Poppy.

Poppy weighs 13 pounds and experienced some sort of trauma, possibly going under a barbed wire fence, causing major damage to her right eye and a deep laceration on her shoulder. She was brought to the shelter as a stray and was unclaimed.

Poppy still has some vision in that eye so we are not going too remove it. She has full vision in her other eye. Look at that love bug.

Secondly, meet little “Kokomo” who came in with the last of the Tropical Stay-Cation dogs of Summer, 2020.

From Sara Rhodes, Team Leader to Il.

“Linda got our pup today. Kokomo is an adult. CACC Shelter thought 6-8 years old.

Well, Kokomo was doing fine in foster care until last weekend when he stated having some very odd siezures.

He would fall over, shake, urinate and after about 30 seconds, stand up as if nothing had ever happened.

After seven of these, Dr. Blasso started him on phenobarbital on Monday.

So far, so good. He is very sweet.

Then we have little 9 year old Cherri. She was already named, as she was brought in as a surrender to the shelter. She had seven bladder stones and very bad teefies.

This is Cherri shaved. Besides having bladder stones, she came in missing 14 teeth and our vet removed 12 more yesterday. Ouch.

She is being fostered near Chicago and her Foster Mom says she is very sweet.

Lastly, we have a darling five year old boy in North Texas.

Many thanks to Rae Steeb, our North Texas Team Leader who arranged transport from the middle of Texas with volunteers John Schearer and Melissa Gobel, both rushing to get him from the shelter on a Saturday morning, in order to get him to the vet by noon before they closed.

He does have one very odd issue.

Are you ready? THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM!! He had the normal vetting and THERE IS NOTING WRONG WITH HIM!

He’s up for adoption but you will need to be within driving distance of Ft. Worth Texas, or be able to fly in to get him if approved. (And he loves other small doggies!)

So that’s where we are.

Even though there are only four.. three of them are costing us around $2000.00 each.

Then we have our “long haulers”.

They have things like autism, yes, they think it’s a real thing for dogs, we have one who is being too afraid of people and needing more socialization, one with breast cancer that could return at any time but hasn’t yet, ect., and one just had a dental for around $500.00.

Just call us the “Land of Broken Toys”. These dogs cost us from between $1000-$2000 yearly.

You know how much it costs to own a Bichon. Grooming, Teeth Cleaning, removing lumps and bumps and the list goes on.

The older they get the more it costs. And the more we pray, that they all get older!

But still, we are here and working. We are checking shelters in every state.

Sometimes there IS a Bichon, but the shelters want to place them with their citizens first and you can’t blame them for that.

I will issue matching challenges for these four, if any come in.

I don’t really know what else to do but to come and tell you about them.

Please know that if you are feeling alone, you aren’t REALLY alone.

God loves you and so do I!

There have been far more who have survived far worse.

Remember, you are loved. All My Love, Robin

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
