Gem Of The Day: “When I Needed a Hand, I Found Your Paw.”
We have had a quiet couple of months and now the spring storms are raining down upon us with Bichons and Bichons Mixes that are busted, broken and sick.
After paying our vet bills on Tuesday, we were in the red by -$814.47.
Since our last newsletter, we have taken in Eight Bichons or Bichons Mixes, and some are in pretty rough shape.
Some just need regular vetting which is costing us between $800.00 and $1500.00 per dog for ten days of quarantine to protect our foster parent’s own dogs from shelter diseases like kennel cough, parvo, giardia, and distemper, heart worm testing and treatment if needed, (Heart worm treatment is being quoted at over $1000.00 per Bichon in the San Antonio area. We presently have four HW Positive dogs in South Texas) fecal testing, senior blood work if over age six (running $150.00) spaying or neutering, vaccinations, ect. If they need a specialist, like an eye specialist, or a dental specialist, or a skin specialist, that can easily add another $1000-$2500 on top of the normal amount for vetting.
These are the newest Small Paws dogs needing your help.
This is “Cotton” an owner surrender from a family who could no long treat this large, deep, open wound on her back. She is only 2 1/2 years old.
When the owner showed us this picture, I knew it was urgent. Small Pawser Vicki Furstenburg, under the direction of our new North Texas Team Leader, Rae Steeb, went to pick her up from the family that very night.
After several trips to the vet and two specialized Prisma Wound antibiotic bandages, Cotton is so much better. Before, during and after pictures. It is healing.
These are the others.
“Little Monkey” is 3.5 yrs old and weighs 16.5 lbs Shelter dog in South Texas.
Poppy is 1-1.5 years old and 7#’s 12 oz. Look at that Bichon Tail. Shelter dog in Chicago.
She knew a Bichon. And she has also tested positive with the Elisa Test for live parasites called Giardia.
She is being treated.
THIS IS WHY WE QUARANTINE OUR RESCUES SO THEY WON’T PASS THESE DISEASES ON TO OUR FOSTER PARENT’S OWN DOGS.
Our South Texas Team Leader Karla Karter went to pick up Brody at a South Texas shelter today. His adoption had fallen through and they asked us to come. He is two years old and will need to be shaved. He said he has met and exchanged phone numbers with two Bichons and we believed him.
“Toby” is a 5 year old male Owner Surrender. The North Texas shelter says he’s extremely sweet.
(He looks like he could be related to Vicki Furstenburg as they are both cute as buttons.)
He will need full vetting.
“Bluebell” Born approx. early 2018. Shelter dog from Chicago area.
“Indigo” Born approx. 2017. Shelter dog from Chicago area.
“JT” Born approx. 2013. His owner died in KY. He is absolutely devastated. Look at that face. He has bad teeth and hasn’t been to the vet in a while due to his owner’s health. He Needs Us. There are times when I don’t know how we are going keep taking them in when more foster homes are needed.
We are going to need to start flying some of the dogs in Karla’s team. South Texas is being saturated like Chicago.
And yet, with all of the need, I think of the “glory gifts” we have been given time and time again, over the years. Dogs that shouldn’t have made it, made it. With our prayers.
In almost 21 years, over 100 foster dogs have gotten away from their foster homes and have been found, safe and alive, time and time again. THAT’S a “Glory Gift!” Many thanks to one of our Team Leaders, Kathryn Smith for the SPR ID tag that each and every SPR rescue gets, with my phone number and the offer of a reward, if found. Thank you Kathryn!
When there is no one else to love them, no one else to ease their physical and mental pain, you all come together as a team and become their family. YOU are their Glory Gifts!
This is my believe as sure as I am typing to you now. Just as we love these little diseased and dirty dogs, dogs with parasites and bleeding sores, dogs that are by no means perfect or even close to perfect, There is a Father who loves each of YOU. Just as you are. No matter what you have done or where you have been. No matter how dark it gets, He is there, loving YOU, asking nothing in return but for your love to Him.
(I often say that Jesus knows me inside and out and loves me anyway. Now THAT is a Glory Gift!)
Won’t you look into your hearts and pocket books one more time to be a Glory Gift to Cotton, Little Monkey, Poppy, Brody, Toby, Bluebell, Indigo, and devastated and mourning little JT.? I will issue all matching donation challenges. This is the first one.
From Lori and Andy Foster, firstname.lastname@example.org, Team Leaders to Tennessee, we have this challenge for $100.00. Thank you Lori and Andy.

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
