Gem of the Day: “The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.”

~M.K. Clinton~

Dear Small Pawsers,

We have the following matching challenges for the two pairs of Bichon brothers who are littermates.

What is a matching challenge?

First, we had a call in matching challenge from Joan and Pat Borders at jpborders@aol.com for $500.00. Thank you Joan and Pat! Is there anyone who is able to match the Borders?

Next, from another of our charter members, Ardys Adams we have another challenge for $500.00! Ardys was one of the 25 original members from the old AOL Bichon Frise Board back in 1998! Thank you Ardys!

Next, from Dawn Bove at d.bove@fcpmllc.com we have this matching challenge for $250.00. Thank you Dawn. I hope that one of you can match Dawn!

Next, from Jackie Whipple in North Carolina, we have this challenge in honor of Lori Foster, our Tennessee Team Leader who is battling newly diagnosed Leukemia in the hospital right now, Thank you Jackie!

Lori was my very first team leader when I joined Small Paws over 15 years ago. I am in NC with Kathryn now, but Lori has remained a friend via Facebook.. so in memory of Lupin, the first Bichon I ever rescued with her help, and in her honor, I am donating 10 dollars for every one of those 15 years, and I challenging everyone else who’s ever met, talked to, or loved Lori to do the same!

Please challenge others in honor of Lori Foster.

I’m hoping we can get these dentals on these two sets of brothers scheduled and paid for. Dentals are just going through the roof, it seems.

I know how much they are! Personally! My 10 year old Reagan is going in this morning for a dental. I’m praying for no extractions! I love that little guys so. All My Love, Robin

Gem of the Day:  “The poor dog, in life the firmest friend. The first to welcome, foremost to defend.”

~Lord Byron, Poet~

Dear Small Pawsers,

I’m not sure what else to say. Meet Sawyer and Finn,

These two are suspected littermates, brothers, 3 years old.

My guess is that they have never been groomed.

Even in their condition, they still smiled at us when we picked them up from a shelter near Chicago.

They knew that life as they knew it, had ended that day. They knew they were going to be loved and cherished, together.

They need everything. The works. And in addition, from our vet:

SAWYER- estimate 3 years. Ear infection left ear. Will need dental.

3. FINN- estimate 3 years. Has underbite. End of tail irritated. Suspect “happy tail”. Will use ointment for 2 weeks and recheck.

What Is Happy Tail Syndrome?

Happy tail syndrome occurs when a dog repeatedly whacks his tail against hard objects (walls, doors, furniture) until the end of the tail becomes an open wound.

It will run about $900.00 for each one to be fully vetted.

Do you want to see what they REALLY look like? Ok. This is what was underneath all of that. They are white!

And one of them does the wave and says “Thank You!”! The other one does the happy dance just to be rescued by Small Paws!

Meet Teddy and Bear.

Then, if one set of littermates wasn’t enough, we got an owner surrender form from a gentleman whose health and finances were failing. He had two eight year old brothers who had only seen a vet for a rabies shot. Ever.

They have never been apart and are extremely bonded. They are located in North Carolina.

Teddy doesn’t have anything major wrong, other than a mouth full of bad teeth. But Bear has bad teeth AND other issues. He weighs twice what Teddy does at nearly 24 pounds. All tests are pointing to Cushing’s Disease.

We have already spent almost $600.00 on exams, heartworm tests, fecal tests, their other vaccinations and Cushing’s Disease testing for Bear.

We get the Cushing’s test and thyroid test results back, tomorrow, but he looks Cushionoid to me.

For two 8 year olds who have had no vetting, including what we have already spent, we are looking at around $1500.00 per dog.

If Bear does have Cushing’s, that treatment is expensive but Cushing’s can be medically managed. That’s the good news!  These boys are precious!

So for just these two sets of brothers, we ae going to need almost $5000.00 to vet them due to a lack of vet care in their previous lives. (Have you ever noticed we don’t get perfected coiffed Bichons, with perfect teeth, who have been fully vetted and are house trained, into rescue?)

I’m here and will issue all matching challenge donations.  All My Love, Robin

Lori Foster Update

Please keep praying for our TN. Team Leader, Lori Foster. Here, she is holding her precious “Matteo”, which means “Gift from God.” The leukemia tests came back as a very dangerous and aggressive type. She had her first of five straight chemo treatments, yesterday. She and Andy do so appreciate your prayers. In fact, they are counting on them.

We have also now added Text-to-Donate feature! It’s simple and secure. You can use any major credit card as well as Google Pay and PAYPAL! Text the number 44321 (how easy is THAT number to remember?!) and type the letters SPR ( all capitals) in the message area. A secure link will come up with simple instructions. After that, you can text a donation of any amount to Small Paws anytime without filling out your information again! We hope you enjoy the ease and security of Text-to-Donate, to help the Bichons!

If we already have your credit card on file, please e-mail Louie and let him know the amount of your donation.

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.

(All recipients of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter receive it voluntarily. Small Paws never gleans e-mail addresses from other e-mail lists. Small Paws never solicits e-mail addresses or shares them with other “lists” or organizations.)
