Dear Small Pawsers,

On Thursday night we got a 10 year old Male Bichon in from a shelter near Chicago.

Sara Rhodes, our Team Leader for IL. got a call asking if we could take him.

Look at that precious face. We named him Snickers, as he is very sweet.

He was also at death’s door by Friday morning.

You see, he was surrendered to the shelter by his owner who couldn’t afford to deal with his problem.

Snicker’s has a severe Perineal Hernia.

Dr. Paul Blasso D.V.M., our vet in the Chicago area, called me early Friday morning.

The techs had taken him outside and the hernia had completely covered what he needed to be open to be able to go to the bathroom. He was straining and screaming. He had a blockage of impacted hard stool and was in terrible pain and unable to go. This is why.

As you can see, this is a life or death problem.

Dr . Blasso told us we had to get him to a surgeon within a few hours or put him to sleep. He was screaming. (Snickers, not Dr. Blasso)

On that particular Friday morning I couldn’t locate a volunteer who was able to go pick him up from the vet and rush him to VCA Aurora and to veterinary surgeon, Dr. Abel, who has done many surgeries for us before.

Since we couldn’t locate a volunteer who could go there immediately, Dr. Blasso called one of his employees on her day off. She was ten minutes from the clinic and she came and got him and rushed him to VCA Aurora Emergency.

Snicker’s went in through emergency, but Dr. Able was already booked until late evening and he’s the only surgeon there able to do this intricate of a surgery.

Though he couldn’t do the surgery on Friday, he made time to “McGiver” him, so he could wait for surgery until tomorrow, Tuesday, morning,

He sedated him and manually went up with gloved hand, separating manually,  and removed a balled up huge mass of dried stool, which had been there only God knows how long.

Then he cave him a liquid “work fast” stool softener and literally held him open as it cleaned our boy out so he could stop being in pain for a few days.

I was waiting to get the estimate for the surgery, which includes our 15% rescue discount.

It just came.

Click here to see a PDF file of Snicker’s estimate which comes to between
$4,442.62 – $5,109.01.

He needs this surgery before he fills back up. Sorry. There is no other way to put it. It’s painful and he can’t keep going through this.

I’m here and will issue all matching challenges.

What is a matching challenge?

We have less than 24 hours to save this life. All My Love, Robin

P.S. We have gotten in five new dogs in, last week. An Owner Surrender just came in for three more in North Carolina. It’s starting up again, as we knew it would.

We have also now added Text-to-Donate feature! It’s simple and secure. You can use any major credit card as well as Google Pay and PAYPAL! After that, you can text a donation of any amount to Small Paws anytime without filling out your information again! We hope you enjoy the ease and security of Text-to-Donate, to help the Bichons!

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
