Gem Of The Day: As I grew older it seemed that I was not making a big enough difference, particularly given my own incredible good fortune. I went from feeling content that things were going well, to realizing that I hadn’t even begun to scratch the surface of what needed to be done.” – Richard Branson

Meet “Oliver Twist”, a three year old male who was taken to a South Texas shelter as a stray. We havet him and he is currently at The Well Pet Center under the care of Dr. Brian Ping.

The shelter said this little boy was in trouble. They couldn’t get his mouth open due to the mats. After Dr. Ping examined him, he told us that our little Oliver is also  Heartworm Positive.

Of course he is. (I don’t know how a mosquito could even find a way through all of those mats.)

His estimate for everything, to vet him, quarantine, and heartworm treatment is going to be around $1800.00 if nothing else is wrong.

I authorized them to shave him and he is white. We need help with the rest of his bill and to treat him for Heartworm Disease.

Then, in the blink of an eye, came another one.

I named her “Glory”because one day she will be Glorious.

Glory was wounded severely in her neck. Possibly something got her.

Then we have this estimate for Solo and Princess Leia. for $2,223.19

“Solo” age six. He is very bonded with Leia.

We got word from a relative that the owner of Solo and Leia had had five smaller strokes and her two Bichons were being kept in crates in an empty house, in Dallas, being let out once daily. The owner  fell over them the prior week and broke her arm and was now back in the hospital, long term, then to a facility as she can not take care of herself. We had to go about getting legal ownership but we got both Bichons out of the hot house the next day. Please have a plan for your Bichons if something were to happen to you. It is imperative.

Solo was able to be cleaned up but Leia was matted to the skin and had to be shaved down. She was miserable in the heat of the crate.

5 Year Old Leia before and after. This is what a Bichon looks like completely shaved

and yes, she is embarrassed. They are both under the direction of our North Texas Team Leader, Rae Steeb.

Then, one of the shelters asked us to come and get “Primo. He is 18 lbs and two years old and is now at Mancheca Vet Clinic. His estimate is for around $900.00. Total neglect.

We have these updates on five dogs in Chicago from our vet, Dr. Blasso, including Brooks and Dunn. They are funded. The others still need help with vetting of around $800.00 each. Except for Glory. Her bill will be more likely to be around $2000.00 to put her back together again. She was wounded in the neck.

Subject: Update from Dr Blasso 7/21/19

Hello gang 😊. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Here is the update on everyone:

  1. SUNNY- estimate 2-3 years. 16 lbs.  Schedules for surgery/groom Tuesday the 23.

  1. BROOKS- estimate 1-2 years. 11 lbs, 5 oz.  Blood work was normal except his neutrophils were a bit high at 26,000 (normal 2,000-11,000). Usually indicates bacterial infection or inflammation. He came in with an ear infection and mild nasal discharge, slight cough. Normal temp, etc.  Started meds of course. Rechecked his CBC on the 17th. Neutrophils still elevated at 27,900). Still had slight cough/sneeze. No nasal discharge. Temp normal still. So I added another antibiotic, changed cough suppressant, added antihistamine. Plan on rechecking CBC on the 24th. Think ok to proceed with surgery still, which we have schedule for Tuesday the 23 as well as the groom. If doing ok can go home Saturday the 27th.

  1. DUNN- estimate 1-2 years of age. 11 lbs, 2 oz.  He too came in with slight cough/nasal discharge. His neutrophils were elevated as well. Mild increase in liver enzyme ALT at 136). Started liver support. His recheck CBC showed that neutrophils were still increased, but slightly less then last time. His ALT came up a bit to 146, but he has only been on liver support for 10 days. Still asymptomatic for liver disease. Still had slight nasal discharge/cough. So, like Brooks, I added another antibiotic, changed cough suppressant, and added antihistamine. I think he is ok to proceed with surgery as well, however let’s do a bile acids test just to check liver function. If ok, let’s proceed and recheck his liver enzymes again in 2-3 weeks. I will also check his CBC on the 24th. Surgery/groom scheduled Tuesday the 23rd. Ok to leave Saturday the 27th.

  1. EVIE-  mild increase in non specific liver enzyme ALP at 208 (normal- 5-131). Started liver support. Also had mild increase in precision psL- can’t rule out pancreatitis but asymptomatic. She needs to lose weight (body condition score of 8/9, with 5/9 being ideal). Has luxating patella left knee- asymptomatic. Has 2 cm dermal growth on back. Plan to remove and biopsy. Will also need dental. Had a flea- gave Capstar.  Plan on surgery/groom Wednesday the 24th. Ok to discharge Monday the 29th. Should recheck liver enzyme in 3 weeks.

  1. GLORY-  estimate 3 years. 7 lbs, 5oz.  Came in with wound on bottom of neck. Was to sensitive to access. They had wrap around neck too. Had to give a sedative to access. Removed wrap. They cleaned it well, but I’m not a fan of leaving the wrap on as I seen it construct down and cause difficulty breathing. Plus it doesn’t allow the wound to dry out. Bloodwork showed mood increase in non specific liver enzyme ALP. Started liver support. Will want to recheck liver enzyme in 3 weeks. Scheduled for surgery/groom Friday the 26th.

So there ya have it. Again, hope you are a doing well.”

Then back down  in South Texas, Karla Carter has been busy.

One of the shelters asked us to come and get “Primo. He is 18 lbs and two years old and is now at Mancheca Vet Clinic.

There are moreyour eyes are probably glazing over.

All in all we need to raise $6,623.19 just for these.

Then we received an owner surrender for this eight year old female today. This is what the owner said.

“Just turned 8 in May, Sophie”

From the owner: “I’m worried I can’t take care of and keep her safe anymore. My son has developmental and mental health issues. Over the past year he’s been increasingly angry and short fused. Both my parents have health problems so I’m not able to be home as often. He confessed he’s worried he’ll snap one of these times when he gets triggered and might hurt her. The situation isn’t getting better so I’m trying to find homes for all of our pets. Good health but has a “cherry eye”.

Guys, this is a sad situation. So, the cost to repair a cherry eye is approximately $1200.00. Until we raise what we need for the above dogs we already have Sophie to worry about and she may be in danger. So if we take in Sophie, we will need at least $7,823.19 to be able to pay all of their bills.

I’m here and will issue all matching donation challenges.

I feel like we are mountain climbing again. If we can get to the top they all will get well and wonderful homes like your’s.

With all of us together, it’s just a few more steps.

I’m willing to give it my all. I’m praying that some of you are too.

As much as I don’t like asking, (or can you tell??) you tell me that you want me to come and tell you, for them. All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.

(All recipients of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter receive it voluntarily. Small Paws never gleans e-mail addresses from other e-mail lists. Small Paws never solicits e-mail addresses or shares them with other “lists” or organizations.)

(Always remember. God loves you more than anyone else ever has,
and more than anyone else ever will!)
