Dear Small Pawsers,

It’s been a while since we’ve had an edge of your seat rescue like the one I’m about to tell you about, all thanks to a retired Chicago Police Officer who we call Cindy Marie.

Cindy, we can not thank you enough for your months of hard work in tracking and safely trapping this precious Bichon as he lived on the streets of Chicago, dodging cars and coyotes for over two months.

We ALL thank you for the life of our little “Luau”, the latest of our Tropical Stay-Cation Bichons of Summer, 2020.

Cindy did everything she could to find his owner, but no one came forward.

Peoples! A BICHON was running the streets! Look how close he is to the street!

Luau was hungry and scared. Bichons are not meant to have to take care of themselves! No dog is! The days were terrifying.

The nights were worse, as he was running scared, searching for anything to eat to keep himself alive.

The longer a Bichon is loose, the more scared he becomes, and Luau ran from everyone who was trying to help him.

Attempts were made to capture him both in early mornings and late into the night. For TWO months. He was just scared to death and getting thinner by the day.

He is just over a year old. And he was completely alone. But Cindy was leaving food for him to try to gain his trust. Look at his tail as he discovered food.

FINALLY…a MIRACLE! Cindy trapped him in a humane trap! There was no collar or microchip. Look at his little nose. They think it may be from sunburn.

Cindy took him to the CACC shelter to see if an owner had been searching for him. Nada.

Little Luau is now OURS, safe at our veterinarian’s office! Miraculously, his mats protected him from both fleas and heart worms. He is very loving, despite all he has been through.

He is of course not neutered yet, will need all vetting which will run around $800.00, including quarantine, and we will need to work with him for a while to help him with his running instincts, but little Luau needs our help now.

He isn’t able for adoption yet, but when he is he will require a back yard with six foot wood fence with secure locks on all gates. He will require an adult home so he can’t escape when the kids come in and out of the doors. He is on ESCAPE WATCH for here on out! Thank God he survived this nightmare!

It’s days like these that make the others worth it. A precious life was saved by a stranger. Cindy Marie called our IL. Team Leader, Sara Rhodes, as soon as she had him.

Cindy never gave up and now it’s out turn to take over!

If and only if you are able to do so, this is how to help him. With all of my gratitude and love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.

(All recipients of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter receive it voluntarily. Small Paws never gleans e-mail addresses from other e-mail lists. Small Paws never solicits e-mail addresses or shares them with other “lists” or organizations.)
