Hi Robin,
Please offer up a challenge for all those who are lucky enough to still have a good income.  I’m so grateful that my trucker husband is ‘essential’ and grateful that he spends most of his time with no contact with others!
I’m so fearful for those pups getting scooped up st the shelters.  I hope we aren’t swamped with no-longer-needed-as-companions pups when the crisis is over and people return to their usual routines.  Emoji
Going to try the Text-to-Donate and sending $50 from me, Bugsy, Meryl and Beamer.
God bless you and please stay safe.

First, I need to to let you all know that we have had a devastating loss. It happens so very rarely with us, that we lose one. This one hit me hard as I was there with him.

It was our precious little 5 year old Tahiti.

As you know, Tahiti came to us here in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Sadly, he succumbed to complications of Heart Worm Disease a little after Midnight on Saturday morning at Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists Emergency Hospital here in Tulsa.

My husband Dale and I rushed to get there and made it about five minutes before he left us. I was stroking his little body and through my tears, I told him that he was loved and to run to the arms of Jesus.

His foster parents Jan and Rick Batton got there a few minutes after he passed. Jan and Rick have fostered over 50 Bichons for us over the years. What a precious treasure he was.

I know Tahiti would want us to continue to help others like him.

Remember little Calypso with the heart murmur who we sent to Medvet in Worthington Ohio? Well! We have great news here. It was NOT a PDA, the usual kind of young dog heart murmur that we see which requires surgery.

Calypso has a BENIGN heart murmur that has been there since birth but it will cause him no problems and he is expected to live a normal life! He is in treatment for sarcoptic mange so it will be a while before he is available. But he is going to be fine!

As you know things are so different now than they were last year at this time.

We have had to cancel the 2020 Okie Bash, usually held here in Tulsa, Oklahoma in October due to Covid 19. Oklahoma is a hot spot and everything here is cancelled, from Octoberfest, to the Tulsa State Fair, to The Huge annual Christmas Parade and everything inbetween.

Also, our Board has made the unanimous decision to cancel our Online Fall/Holiday Auction this year.

With so many people unemployed, and it would require people to go in person to the post office to mail their items, we just felt it wasn’t the right time and it was safer to wait until spring.

We have now lost funds from the Florida Bash in March, the Spring Online Auction, The Okie Bash in October and the Fall Holiday Auction.

All of these things together usually bring in around $35,000 in needed funds for the Bichons.

It’s also very hard to find Bichons or Bichon Mixes.

As soon as one comes into a shelter, there is a waiting list for people wanting to adopt from the shelter.

It seems the only dogs we are getting are those with injuries or illness.

But then again, that’s what we are here for!

So I want to show you some of our newbies. We are keeping with the Tropical Stay-cation names of summer.

First, meet 4 year old Tiki, who was probably attacked by a coyote. His trachea was nicked in the attack, releasing air under the skin in his body.

Tiki was diagnosed with subcutaneous emphysema. It’s a rare condition in which air  gets trapped under the skin’s lowest layer called the subcutis or hypodermis. It can occur after a surgery or a traumatic injury.  His whole body swelled up like there was bubble wrap under his skin. He was miserable. We had to wait for it to go back down as his trachea healed. He was in the hospital for weeks, receiving fluids and pain meds as this is a painful condition. He’s on the mend now and will be going to foster care soon near Chicago! He was very critical but is going to be fine!

Next, we have little Kona, who is approximately 10 years old, but you’d never know it! He came from the CACC shelter in Chicago. Kona was taken to the shelter by his owners to be euthanized because he has mange, a very treatable condition. He was already in the euthanasia room by the time we got there. This was way too close. He is being treated for sarcoptic mange at our vet’s office near Chicago.

Next, we have little Zoomba! Doesn’t he look like a Zoomba?! He’s around four and also came from CACC in Chicago. He was an unclaimed stray and we got the hold! His mother was pure white and his father must have had a beard and mustache. Tell me you can see that!

Next, we have a little female named Maui! She looks to be part Maltese and she said she once met a Bichon, so we believed her and grabbed her from the CACC shelter. The kids in her home had put a rubber band around her leg. That’s what the purple wrap is. It is almost fully healed now.

All in all, it is going to run about $7000 for these newest dog’s vet bills. Tiki’s bill is the largest. He was the most critical other than Kona, who was waiting in a room at the shelter to assume room temperature. Not on my watch!

So this is where we are. We need your help if you can afford to help. I will issue all Matching Donation Challenges!

Humphrey Sisco

Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006 Pet Loss Link

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.

(All recipients of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter receive it voluntarily. Small Paws never gleans e-mail addresses from other e-mail lists. Small Paws never solicits e-mail addresses or shares them with other “lists” or organizations.)
