One Of The Worst Cases of Neglect We’ve Seen. Prepare Yourselves, But You Can Look.

Gem Of The Day:We should remember in our dealings with animals that they are a sacred trust to us from our Heavenly Father. They are dumb and cannot speak for themselves. ”

~ Harriet Beecher Stowe ~

“Reese” is estimated to be only around 1-2 years old. I don’t think he’s ever been groomed.

He was found as a stray and taken to a shelter in South Texas. Our South Texas Team Leader, Karla Carter, sent a volunteer to get him and take him to the vet.

Some of his toenails had curled under and pierced his pads.

This is some of the worst neglect we have seen in 21 years. I can’t even identify body parts here.

Here he is after we rescued him, shaved him, and after anesthesia. And he is also Heart Worm Positive.

This is a letter from his veterinarian with an estimate for his care, and this estimate is including a rescue discount. This is what is needed for just one dog.

Good morning,

I enjoyed talking with you too. Thank you for bearing with me. For everything, it comes to between $1,500 to $1600 for Reese. That is vaccines, all treatment, ten days quarantine, a dental cleaning and immiticide treatment  to treat his heartworms).

Sincerely, Dr. Sadie Bowling>

So, we are seeing the worst of the worst of neglect. And an estimate is for $1600.00 to get him to a point where he can be adopted and loved, probably for the first time in his life.

I want to to hold him and explain how sorry I am that he was in this horrible condition.

I want to promise him that he will NEVER EVER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE feel this awful again and that he has this promise from all of us.

Some of the matching challenges below are still up, for Reese. Just scroll down.

Can someone please help us to help this poor creature?

If ever there was one who needed us, it is Reese.

All My Love, Robin

Dear Small Pawsers,

Meet Charlotte and Olivia who very bonded! They are the ones that were abandoned where one was in  crate and one was tied to the crate, on concrete, in very hot weather. We got them yesterday! We have them both!

“Charlotte” and “Olivia”

And we also got “Moose” out of the shelter, yesterday! And was he ever happy!

Thank you all so much who have helped so far!

We have the following matching donation challenges! Many thanks to those who issued them and to those who are able to match one of them!

Dearest Robin: Please, please take care of yourself. I can only imagine the constant stress you are under.
I would hope every member of Small Paws will step up and donate what ever amount they can afford to help these little innocent little fluffs. It’s so heartbreaking to see the neglect.
I guess it will be never ending. So we all have to help as best we can.
I will issue a challenge in the amount of $1,000.00.
Can anyone match me real soon? Please.
As always sent with Love, Dawn>

And next, from Beverly Seffel at beverlyseffel@yahoo.com, we have another matching challenge for everything up to $1000.00! Beverly, thank you so very much and I hope we reach $1000.00 with your challenge!

Robin,

I’m issuing a challenge for anything up to $1000.00. Will you put out to the group the challenge and lets raise some money. God sees the work you are doing.  Never doubt what a few strong women can do.  Beverly>

In honor of Robin and her being watched over by Him! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for taking care of Robin! These poor precious babies need her so much, along with all of her wonderful volunteers, and they need all of us who can give whatever amount. It will all add up!

<Hi Robin, so glad you’re ok!
This coming Saturday, August 17, will be Small Paws Abby’s 4th birthday. We will be celebrating with a big party with her favorite friends, human and doggie. I’m sure many dogs are loved as much as Abby is, but none more.
In honor of Abby’s August birthday, I would like to issue a challenge for $100.00 to all who have ever loved a dog, to give whatever they can afford during this slow donation month.
Thank you for all you do!!
Love, Marge Gottesman>

And from Katherine Overby at kentuckykittykat@gmail.com, we have this challenge for $100.00. Is there anybody out there who can match Katherine?

Awwww Robin, I am so far away in California. I wish I were close to physically help you as much as I would be able, but since I’m not, I will issue a matching challenge for $100.00. Take care of yourself. God has put you in a very difficult work of love. I know you get desperate at times, and I certainly understand. Will keep holding you and your faithful team and your little desperate incoming babies in prayer.

Sending love, Kat and the Girls>

Lastly, I want to thank you for all of your prayers for me. Truly. I feel them ever so strongly!

All My Love, Robin

Dear Small Pawsers,

It’s very late here in Tulsa Oklahoma and it’s August. Dreadful, worst month of the year for all charities, August.

When I was younger, I could handle it better at 41 than I’m seem to be handing it at 62.

The stress of paying the bills for these Bichons, and the things that people are doing to them, and I use the word people, lightly, is really starting to get to me.

I love what I do. You all know that.

But I’m getting older and there are times when I wonder if it will ever stop and unfortunately, I know the answer.

But then He reminds me that He sent YOU. Our dedicated volunteers and transporters. Our Blanketeers. Our Team Leaders. Almost all of these folks work full time and yet they still volunteer for these Bichons.

I haven’t come to you in a couple of weeks, dreading when the awful “A” word would appear. August. And it did. It has a habit of doing that every year for the past 21 years of Small Paws.

But I know that you won’t know what’s going on unless I come and tell you, and show you.

It’s what you’ve told me to do over and over and yet, each time I need to do it, I dread it.

I know what stress is. Believe me, in this job, I know.

The last thing I want to do is to put stress on YOUR finances to save a life that you’ll probably never ever meet.

Please, if donating for their care is going to run YOU short, then don’t do it. That adds more stress to me than wondering how to pay the vet bills. Thinking that you are wondering how to pay your bills.

Instead, please pray for others to help who can afford to help them. Maybe someone who has never donated to us before.

I wasn’t going to tell you this. Really I wasn’t. But I can tell you. You are my family.

I was writing a newsletter to you all last week, when I knew something was wrong.

Last Tuesday, I ended up in the ER of St. Francis Hospital. It was something I’ve not had happen before. In fact, usually, things are just the opposite.

My blood pressure was very high at 221/90. They asked me, “Is anything stressing you”? (Dale started to laugh but they had me hooked up to IV’s and Heart monitors so I couldn’t even get at him.)

I told the Doctor or P.A. or Nurse Practitioner or Orderly, or whoever he was, that my job is stressful but I’m used to it. 21 years now.

(That day we took in three owner surrenders and were $6000.00 in the red.)

The Dr’s told me not to think about work.

Just get me a a veterinarian. I’ll probably know them anyway. They’ll fix me right up.

These people wanted to keep me overnight for “observation”. So I could observe myself CATCHING some superbug??

I told them I was going to listen to an audio book about a serial killer with KNIVES if they did that. I’d show THEM high blood pressure. My heart EKG was perfect! My Blood work was perfect! Even my weight was perfect! My Blood Pressure WAS NOT.

After a battery of tests (I do have a brain and it is NOT bleeding) and 13 hours, they called my endocrinologist at home.

She knows me very well and loves me anyway.

She told them this is episodic high blood pressure, completely abnormal for me, and to give me one pill and a prescription for more if I needed them. She told them it was stress and would go back down without being on blood pressure meds and to let me go HOME right now.

She was right. I have had only that one pill.

All week my blood pressure has consistently fallen back to normal.

For me it’s around 110/50, where it was this morning.

So I’m ok. thank you Jesus. Our Board knows, Sara knows, (She even helped process an owner surrender while I was at the ER) and she has written a little about what is going on. BUT READ ABOUT THE LAST TWO WHO ARE IN DANGER. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THEM. Thank you Sara.

From Sara Rhoades <pacess4@att.net>

Here is an update and we are busy again! We are in desperate need of foster homes🙏
We have 4 new fluffs that are needing vetting and one needing surgery on his poor ears!
I will tell you about each one!
They are all sweeties who deserve a chance at love!
Could you please forward this note in your newsletter!
We all need to stand together and help!! We need donations, and foster homes ASAP to help these poor little fluffs.

This poor guy is Higgins. He was found on the streets in total neglect.

Higgins also has bilateral “cauliflower “ ears and will need surgery to fix. (From Robin: The cost will probably be around $1500- 2000. It takes a soft tissue surgeon. This is very painful.)

This is Cuddles, a 6 year old female. We don’t know if she is a little chunky or just has a lot of hair. She is very matted. Rae Steeb pulled her and said her nails are long and curling, from neglect.  She was an owner surrender to a Indiana shelter.

This is Tahoe ❤️. Linda Oschenfeld picked him up from CACC. He was an unclaimed stray.

This poor little girl is Summer. Her family abandoned her in a small crate. She is only about 8 lbs. (Robin thought she once knew a bichon and she didn’t deny it.)

More. From Today. Now Sara is stressed.

Hi Robin
I am adding these pups to the last email update!! Could you please send an URGENT email out to help raise funds so we can save these babies!! I have been up stressing, because we are getting busy in Illinois and always need help with donations and fosters!!

So we have a young male bichon mix that can leave tomorrow, Tuesday! So Linda Oschenfeld can pick him up! He is a sweet stray that was never reclaimed. ( remember all these dogs are at risk once off hold as it is an open intake shelter and when they run out of space , then they have to euthanize dogs to make room😪. It is the sad truth about our society !

The last pictures are unbelievably sad ! There were two females, young left neglected , in a crate, left on the street , in hot weather!! They are thin, dirty, matted and urine stained.  Amazing enough that all they have been through, they are sweet and just want to be loved!
We can get them on Tuesday, today!

(Sorry the pictures aren’t more clear. We can save these two on Tuesday if we can just get some funds in. Look at the one panting who is tied to the crate. .)

One is a bichon mix and her bonded buddy looks like she has some Shih Tzu ( so maybe both are Teddy Bears ? Whatever they are they are in desperate need of Small Paws Rescue!
Robin, please let me know if we can pull them??

Here is another pic of the male! If we can get him, his name will be Moose!! We can get him tomorrow if we can get some help! Sara

So I’m here. I’m well, and I will issue all matching challenges. This is most time sensitive. We need help. All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
