Gem Of The Day: “Out of difficulties grow miracles.”
We have some happy MIRACLE updates for you!
Do you remember ” The Trio”? They were taken to a shelter in Texas due to a family illness. The Mom and Dad are almost ten, and their daughter is 8.
First I had to get it out of my mind that we would never find a foster home for them together. WRONG! God had other plans! Then I had to trust Him that the PERFECT home was out there, AND IT WAS!
The Trio has since been adopted into the most loving family! And look at the sheer joy and love from Betty, their new Mom’s face!
They got to stay together! In the rescue world, placing three older dogs together IS A MIRACLE! Thank you all for helping them, vetting them, and thank GOD for their new Mama and family!
And you remember the story of the two brothers being thrown from a car on a South Texas Highway. One of them, Pipper, broke his back in two places. The surgery was expensive and extensive.
I want to tell you the story of a downright miracle with witnesses. Bonnie Ferguson, Foster Mom Jan Battan, myself, and a host of vets at Oklahoma Veterinary Specialist, here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, all saw what happened and will never forget it.
It started on a Tuesday evening, much like any other. Jan, Pipper’s Foster home had taken him to our vet for a two week post surgical exam when the absolutely unthinkable happened. Pipper was on the exam table and before the vet or Jan could catch him, he slid off of the table onto the hard floor. He could not walk or get up. X-rays confirmed the pins that had been put in during the surgery had moved and now NOTHING was holding his spine together. They told us we had to rush him to the ER and probably have another spinal surgery if he could survive that. Bonnie drove into Tulsa, and I rushed up to meet Jan and Pipper at Oklahoma Veterinary Specialist, owned by Dr. Steven Hodges whom I trust with my life.
The news was the worst possible news. The surgeon came in and told us that since nothing was holding his spine together he would need another surgery that would give him less than a 3% chance of ever being a normal dog.
He and the ER vet recommended euthanasia and we couldn’t believe this was happening. As they moved us to the “Comfort Room”, we waited for them to bring him in.
They asked if we wanted him brought in already sedated. I was about to say yes, when Jan, his foster mom said she wanted to hold him before he was sedated. Of course that’s what we did.
When they brought him in wrapped in a blanket, with a catheter for the final drug already in place, something told me to tell Jan to put him on the floor. I don’t know why wait yes I do and you do too.
As I live and breath, he stood up and started walking across the rug. I went out of that room screaming, (who, MEEE??) to the front desk for them to get a vet in there right now that I was about to euthanize a paralyzed dog with a broken back in two places and he was WALKING!! Dr. Hodges came in and he had seen it happen on the security camera in the room!
He GRABBED Pipper and said, “We are not euthanizing THIS dog!” and he took him back to take out the catheter. Now his back is still showing as broken on X-rays and the pins are not holding anything together but
He is going to acupuncture once a week for two more weeks.
So the thing is this. Since his spine is still healing, and he is squirmy, and he will jump on and off of things, and he can’t be jumped on by any other dogs in anyone’s foster home, we are keeping him in medical boarding for two more weeks. The cost is $70.00 a day and he’s been there since the night he defied death!
God said, “No, not this time. I’m going to give him a spine and he will walk!”
AND HE IS WALKING!
We don’t have time for new matching donation challenges as I am getting ready to fly to Tampa Florida for the Sun Coast Bichon Picnic which benefits Small Paws, (Bonnie and I are flying on donated Airline Ticket Mileage) but if you could help with Pipper’s medical boarding, or his acupuncture, this is how to do that.

Humphrey Sisco

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco’s “Humphrey”, I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
