Hello! This is Robin Pressnall, Executive
Director of Small Paws Rescue® Inc. Thank you so much for your interest
in Small Paws Rescue®! I am going to include in your request for
information, a recent press release, and
news stories! If you would like, this is a brochure that you may print!
Each breed has a rescue organization for
their breed. Small Paws is the largest breed
rescue in the country, with over 800 volunteers
and over 6000 members in 20 countries.
Small Paws is rescuing approximately 150
Bichons each month from across the country.
We rescue Bichons from shelters, from puppy
mills, and from owners who can no longer
take care of them due to a variety of circumstances.
(moving, having babies, going to a nursing
home, health problems, or other end of life
issues, etc.)
There is an increase in the number of owner
surrenders we see, because Small Paws is
becoming so large now with greater visibility.
We have been featured in many media articles , including the best selling book "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul".
We've also been seen on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, and
on Animal Planet for five years, as well as in newspapers,
and other television news stories across
the country.
The more people who know that we are available,
the more people who take advantage of our
rescue services.
Because of our extensive and proven screening
process, it is very rare when an adoption
doesn't work out, however it does happen.
Sometimes it just isn't a match and other
times things can happen such as a death or
illness with the adopter, causing the Bichon
to come back into rescue with Small Paws
Rescue®.
If an adoption doesn't work out we try to
find another match for the adopter. I would
say that 99.5% of the time, the first adoption
works out wonderfully!
Bichons have a wonderful temperament! They
are cheery little lap dogs! But, when they
have been abused or neglected, as with any
creature, their personalities are affected.
We make sure to fully disclose any abuse
or neglect that has happened previously with
one of our rescued Bichons.
..........................
Cashmere after rescue from a puppy mill.......................... Cashmere after adoption!
Many of our Bichons come from commercial
kennels. (Puppy Mills) They have been there
for one reason, to breed and to make a profit.
They haven't been held or loved. They haven't
been socialized around other people. They
are called "breeding stock" and
are treated like farm animals.
In most cases, their food is dropped
to them through a food chute, and their water
comes from a rabbit bottle. These are breeding
operations, operated on a large scale.

These Bichons' teeth are in desperate
need of attention and most times they end
up losing some teeth.

The Bichons that come from commercial kennels
don't know how to relate to people or household
sounds. They only know how to relate to other
dogs, because they haven't been around many
other people and they have never been in
homes before they were rescued. Rehabilitation of a Puppy Mill Dog
When we place a puppy mill rescue, we only
place those in a home with another socialized
dog. That pet dog will teach the rescued
Bichon to be a pet and family member, and
not a farm animal as they have been before.
In the beginning we often placed the kennel
rescues in homes as an only dog. Little did
we know that 100% of those placements would
end up coming back to us in just a few short
weeks.
As soon as we realized that these Bichons
from the puppy mills need another dog in
residence, it became one of our hard and
fast rules.
Below is a bit more about Small Paws Rescue
including a recent press release! If you
need any further information, I am so happy
to speak with you!
Thanks so much, Robin Pressnall
