Gem of the Day: HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY TO MY DARLING BOY, MY FIRST BICHON, CHIPPER PRESSNALL!

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day 'til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

Dear Small Pawsers,

Small Paws Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who may have recently seen us on December 11, 2012, on Fox and Friends in New York City , or on Animal Planet on "Dogs 101.", or you may have read about us in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness, 101 Stories about Finding Your Purpose, Passion and Joy . You also may have seen us on "Inside Edition" with Deborah Norville!

If you missed our previous newsletter, here it is.

Fifteen years ago today, a little puppy was born in a puppy mill in Missouri, who would come to change the face of Bichon Frise rescue, as we know it.

Yes, he is a conglomeration of bad body parts but his heart is one that loves fiercely and beats strongly.

Even today, at age 15, I believe that Chipper is the happiest Bichon I've ever met.

He has circled the drain so many times in his life, only to come back to us.

The only thing I can figure is that God just isn't done with him yet, here on earth.

He has coded, been mostly dead, and has been lifeless after a bronchoscopy. He was resuscitated with mouth to mouth and a chest tube.
Even then, that little tail just wagged.

That was over three years ago.

He has had to be intubated several times due to his collapsing trachea, before we put his stint in, in November.

Then then we tried to kill him with Adequan about a month ago.

He was the one in one thousand dog that goes into anaphylactic shock with this drug, used to treat arthritis. (He has a bit of an arthritic shoulder but once he gets moving he is fine.)

I really thought that last time with the reaction to Adequan was it for him as he went lifeless in my arms as we ran through the ER doors with him.

It was when I was really sick with the flu. I had been in the bed for three days and I was crying thinking this was it. I know I looked SCARY enough to render any decent person baldheaded and breathless.

I asked the front desk for a mask as soon as they took Chipper to the back and the lady looked at me as if to say. "Lady, a mask isn't going to help." I was referring to a surgical mask to keep from spreading the flu, but I digress.

They intubated him and treated him and he came home the next day, seemingly non the worse for wear.

He's like, "Mom, you think THAT was dead?? I've been a WHOLE LOT more dead than that. Sheesh."

Today, you would never know that he has had so many near death experiences.

I think he must have gone up to heaven several times, looked around, jumped in the Lap of my Jesus who was hearing our prayers, blitzed a bit with his predecessor, our Precious Nicholas, and then announced that he had to run, but would see them again someday.

He's just that kind of dog. he's a GREAT dog.

Had I never found Chipper, I would have never found the old AOL Bichon Frise Board, and Susan Sebring, with whom I founded this magnificent obsession, Small Paws Rescue, almost 15 years ago.

Today, Chipper walks a mile and a quarter a day with his Dad and brothers, Spunky Monkey, Reagan and Pipper Pressnall.

See a video of Chipper going for his daily walk. What a blessing!

He isn't blind or deaf and he just loves to eat.

Last night, I took this video with my phone. Now I know the quality isn't great, because I wanted to be able to e-mail it from my phone, but you can get the gist of it.

"I want your DINNER!!"

And because I found Chipper, we are still rescuing Bichons in need today, almost 15 years later.

Sara Pace, our Team Leader to IL. and IN., pulled three Bichons from kill shelters in the Chicago area.

They will all need vetting and quarantine that will run $500-600 each.

We are looking at needing $1800.00 for them, IF nothing else is wrong with them.

Oliver

This is Oliver. He was pulled from the shelter on 2/13/13. He is estimated to be around 4 years old. Will need neuter, dental, quarantine, and vaccinations.

Will keep you posted.
Sara

Willow

Willow came into rescue today. She was an unclaimed stray and at risk of being euthanized. She is estimated at 3-4 years. Vet will exam, vaccinate, do heartworm and fecal. She is around 14 lbs. very sweet! She is starting her 10 day quarantine.

Widget

Dr estimates him at 10-12 months old. He is so matted! Found a dryer sheet and a piece if shredded cheese in his hair. He will need neuter, vaccines and quarantine.

So if you have ever fostered or adopted a Bichon from Small Paws, if you have ever loved a senior dog, and felt blessed with each day that God gives you with them, will you consider making a donation for Willow, Widget, and Oliver?

We need to raise funds for their vetting so that like Chipper, they can be adopted and have long wonderful lives.

Happy 15th Birthday to my precious boy!

All My Love, Robin

>When these folks applied to adopt, and we asked how their Bichon was killed by a car, this was their response. We hear this on an average of once a week.

(These are NOT Bichons adopted from Small Paws.)

PLEASE don't take a chance with the life of your Bichon!
We do not adopt to people who allow their dogs to run loose.

We had him for the last five years, He is very obedient normally when we say "stay" he will stop wherever he is, so some times we are used to play with him in the yard for he loves to run around the yard in circles, during that time we did not put him on the leash, this particular day he was not on leash and did not yield to the command when he saw some dog across the road. It took off so suddenly the on coming driver did not have time to stop the car. That is how it happened.>

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
